How a mundan in Haridwar usually goes
The mundan (mundan sanskar, or chudakarana) is a child's first haircut and one of the Hindu sanskaras. Many families travel to Haridwar to have it done beside the Ganga. It usually takes place on the ghats near Har Ki Pauri: a priest recites the mantras, a barber shaves the child's head, and the hair is offered to the river. Many families follow it with a puja or havan and a meal for relatives.
Your family pandit will set the date and time (the muhurat). Most families bring their own pandit or engage one at the ghat.
Tips for the day
- Go early. The ghats are calmer in the morning, and the roads near Har Ki Pauri get busy towards the evening aarti.
- Avoid big bathing days if you can. Check our festival calendar.
- Pack for the child: a change of clothes, a towel and something to cover the head from the sun.
- Stay the night before so you are not driving in at dawn. Every adult staying at a hotel needs a government photo ID.
After the ceremony: havan, pooja and a family meal
